I, the hybrid and the antidote, a project presented by Liliane Chlela, celebrated its world premiere at Le Guess Who? 2024. On stage, Chlela was joined by Utrecht’s string ensemble Flare Quartet, Cairo’s producer/violinist Nancy Mounir, and Montreal-based producer/musician Radwan Ghazi Moumneh.
Our residential photographer Juri Hiensch was present to capture the project and the special moments surrounding it, both backstage as well as on stage.
As an artist, electronic producer, DJ, and performer Liliane Chlela, who relocated from Lebanon to Canada in 2021, has found herself constantly being asked to choose between creating music that would either ‘reinforce exoticism and tokenism’ or ‘eliminate any sense of individuality or identity’. The project I, the hybrid and the antidote is her way of expressing the frustrations and rejecting this binary phenomenon in the music industry as someone in diasporas.
By forging her own path through this project, Chlela also sheds light on the complex dialogue around the politics and pains of migration. I, the hybrid and the antidote will be an ongoing project that continues to push the boundaries and provoke thoughts and conversations.
