At the time of Dutch colonial rule, trance was a lifeline for the Javanese people, pulsating with fervor as an expression of their yearning for freedom. Now, Indonesian duo Yennu Ariendra and J. Mo'ong Santoso Pribadi, also known as Raja Kirik, are showcasing Java’s history of oppression and resistance. For ‘The Phantasmagoria of Jathilan’, their new performance, they cast a light on the century-old practice of Jathilan horse dance, a folk style whose impact to entertain, encourage, heal, and unite people in revolution remains palpable. For it, they count with the collaboration of singer Silir Pujiwati and choreographer and mime Ari Dwiyanto.
