It was in the year of 2021 that Joe Lally’s The Messthetics (his instrumental trio with former Fugazi bandmate and drummer Brendan Canty and guitarist Anthony Pirog) met their match: James Brandon Lewis. The air-lingering magic of their live crossover was too much to bear. So, this year, Lewis, Lally, Canty, and Pirog distilled it into ‘The Messthetics and James Brandon Lewis’. The quartet’s electrifying debut was released in the spring adorned with the Impulse! seal. The legendary label’s endorsement certainly speaks to the four musicians' infectious musical kinship, which truly thrives live, where the instruments first dove into the four-way conversation.
