Meshell Ndegeocello is a true chameleon; singer-songwriter, rapper, bassist, camouflaged (yet ever-present) session musician for a variety of other artists, GRAMMY-winner, neo-soul movement igniter. Yet, even when sinking seamlessly into each one of her many roles, she has always worn her artistry and identity as a proud Black queer woman on her sleeve. Last year, she fulfilled a childhood dream: releasing a record on Blue Note. ‘The Omnichord Real Book’ is a clear access point into Ndegeocello’s jazz, rock, dub, and soul leanings; it is, however, merely the beginning.
