Mayssa Jallad

On ‘Marjaa: The Battle of the Hotels’, Beirut-based up-and-coming singer-songwriter Mayssa Jallad combines her three vocations; music, urban research, and architectural history. The result, written in collaboration with producer Fadi Tabbal, is a densely textured folk music text, in which Jallad’s research on Beirut’s Hotel District and Tabbal’s spatial approach to find each other. Whilst ethereal, her work is also profoundly political; in an interview with Foxy Digitalis, Jallad expressed her wish for her work to ‘crystalize the necessity of renewing the political class in Lebanon’ by pushing the new generation to reassess the country’s history.
