Mark Fell & Pat Thomas
Curated by Tropical Fuck Storm
Captured on the live recording Reality Is Not A Theory, this project unites two major figures in British experimental music, each having developed rigorous practices from radically different backgrounds and perspectives. While Mark Fell’s singular take on synthetic abstraction emerged from Sheffield’s electronic underground, Pat Thomas is a virtuoso improvising pianist steeped in jazz and modernist art music (also part of exhilarating free jazz quartet أحمد [Ahmed]) who has also worked with sampler-based electronics for decades. Their collaboration presents two complementary approaches to algorithmic and improvised music for computer and piano, exemplifying both artists’ insatiable search for new (and sometimes uncomfortable) playing situations.
Post-apocalyptic acid punk disco scuzzheads Tropical Fuck Storm return to Le Guess Who? for a guest curation that feels like a homecoming. When asked to select artists for this year's edition, they went, as they put it, "a little wild". They've curated a sonically diverse mix featuring longtime musical inspirations, friends and collaborators; artists that they've met on the road, and acts that they've been eager to see live.
