Modulation is Utrecht’s own accessible night of live performances and concerts centered around modular synthesizers and other hardware electronic instruments. A place for newcomers as well as veterans, from ambient to noisemakers, explosive beats, cinematic soundscapes – and everything in between. All performers will be playing in the middle of the space, to make sure you can see where all the sonic magic is happening during each performance.
During U?, Modulation takes you on a journey from teknoid atmospheres to intergalactic trips, with a line-up of four live performers from the synth scene at Hof van Cartesius. Immerse yourself in a Sunday afternoon with electronic hardware and modular synthesizer setups, accompanied by live interactive video and light. We are proud to tell you that this is the first fully FLINTA line-up in the history of Modulation.
Chebedajha
Operating in the vicinity of intense states of anxiety and pleasure, discomfort and relief, the experimental sound of Chebedajha challenges perception and sensitivity to become part of the collective everyday. Chebedajha uses electronic tools to generate sounds that create teknoid atmospheres—always improvised and arranged in-situ, exploring the acoustic capacities of spaces and their limits.
Flofonic
Floor Remmelzwaal always wanted to be an astronaut. Operating her modular synthesizer console with flashing multicoloured lights, creating experimental cinematic soundscapes. She is a synthesizer player. In addition to live performances and studio compositions, she composes work for video artists, collaborates with other musicians, both improvised and live.
She solders her own musical instruments and combines them with pre-built modular synthesizers, effect pedals, computers and sensors. Flofonic’s definition of music is organised sound: droning oscillations, banshee wailing and crushed noise transport the individual on an intergalactic trip.
Mirusi Mergina
Enter the enigmatic realms of Mirusi Mergina, where unpredictability, darkness, and eclecticism converge to create a mesmerizing musical journey. At the core of her compositions lies a deep fascination with the enigmatic and obscure aspects of the human experience, often delving into themes of introspection, existentialism, and the shadows that lurk within the human psyche.
Through raw synth and voice-based soundscapes, accompanied by haunting drones, captivating noise, and entrancing mantric rhythms, she guides her listeners into an altered state of consciousness. Brace yourself for an intense and immersive experience, as her music unveils an unpredictable dynamism that will stir your senses and haunt your soul.
Selestra
Selestra is the music and sound art project of artist, researcher and xenologist Adriana Knouf. Adriana is also the founder of Selestrium Modular, listens to the stars and breaks out of the temporal grid by manifesting cycles from the quantum to the cosmic.
Chebedajha, Flofonic, Mirusi Mergina, and Selestra perform at U? on Sunday, 12 November, as part of the Modulation program.
