MHYSA is the underground popstar alter ego of multidisciplinary artist E. Jane. In her experimental club tracks, she channels the legacies of Black women icons into visions of utopias.
Born in Maryland, E. Jane was enamored with singing form an early age, performing at church and school. Since 2015, they has been developing the performance persona MHYSA, an underground popstar for the cyber resistance.
In 2018, MHYSA released her critically acclaimed debut, fantasii, and in 2020, her second album, NEVAEH. Despite references to mainstream stars like Donna Summer, Prince, Lauryn Hill, and Beyoncé, MHYSA’s atmospheric ballads and discordant experimental club tracks have found suitable homes on progressive labels such as NON, Halcyon Veil, and Hyperdub. Now, together with producer and DJ, Bapari, she shares her new single YONCÉ. Listen below.
MHYSA performs live at Le Guess Who? 2023 on Thursday, 9 November, as part of the program curated by Slauson Malone 1, which also features Ahya Simone, LA Timpa, Nala Sinephro, and more.
