Diaspora in dub: an interview with mundu lawaai
What happens when a 200-year-old maracatu rhythm from Pernambuco blends with footwork, dub, grime, Balinese gamelan and Dutch rap? For Amsterdam-based collective mundu lawaai, the answer comes not in the form of a genre, but as an ongoing conversation following the motto: “Resist, be peaceful and make noise.”
mundu lawaai began in 2023, when improviser-songwriter gabi and electronic musician Alek Kurniawan (aka Mangruv) imagined an improvising band that could be dubbed live. The idea took shape two years later through Amsterdam-based organization Space is the Place, bringing together seven musicians with different musical backgrounds: gabi on guitar, vocals and sampler; Alek Kurniawan on mixing board and dub effects; Chaerin Im on synthesizer; Kroes on bass, Ableton and sampler; Krishna Sutedja on percussion (kendang, gangsa, bonang, ceng-ceng) and suling flute; Niels Luteijn on drums; and rapper HERDER on vocals.
