For the June episodes of COSMOS' monthly show on Refuge Worldwide, we’re exploring the sounds of Iceland and Ireland with two of Europe’s finest independent community radios.
Brought to us via our 2024 Embassy ICRN, both Seyðisfjörður Community Radio and Dublin Digital Radio present two distinctive hours of music, field recordings and otherworldly sonic sensations. A strong reminder of how adventurous and exciting independent broadcasting can be.
Seyðisfjörður Community Radio (Seyðisfjörður, Iceland)
Our COSMOS Embassy 2025, Seyðisfjörður Community Radio, is a shared digital and analogue broadcasting platform located in the village of Seyðisfjörður on the east coast of Iceland. Grown out of the independent art school LungA School, Seyðisfjörður Community Radio is a platform for an open-ended international community of artists, who share, inquire and keep in touch through the radio. “We send. We listen. We send. We listen”. Words to live by.
For this broadcast, they have re-mixed three of the episodes into a one-hour-sound-ecology. You can find all the episodes separately and the original broadcast on the Seyðisfjörður Community Radio Soundcloud and on seydisfjordurcommunityradio.net.
Dublin Digital Radio (Dublin, Ireland)
Dublin Digital Radio (ddr.) is an award-winning online community radio station representing a wealth of alternative music, art and politics across Ireland since 2016. ddr. is wholly funded by its members, composed of listeners and broadcasters alike, ensuring that it remains independent of corporate influence, and is run democratically by its growing community. ddr. aims to provide a radical alternative to established media, as a station supported by and for its community.
