‘What Is Not Strange?’ asks Los Angeles-based performer Tashi Wada on his first solo album’s title. As its name suggests, the artist’s latest work - his most ambitious and impassioned yet - finds him rummaging through a puzzling period in his life, marked by the passing of his father (artist and composer Yoshi Wada) and the birth of his daughter. The music welcomes exploration, as Wada conveys broader narratives (on being alive, death, and finding one’s place in this big, strange world) through new modes of song-based expression carrying loftier weight than his early work. Prior Le Guess Who? performer Julia Holter elevates the record with her signature soaring vocals, both in the recording booth and on the stage as part of Wada’s live band.
