This is a collaboration driven by emotion and intuition, oscillating between the familiar and the unknown. Key figure in the underground rock scene Roy Montgomery joins forces with avant-garde vocalist and songwriter Martha Skye Murphy on Nebular. Created entirely through remote correspondence, as they did with previous recordings Um by Martha Skye Murphy and Broken Heart Surgery by Roy Montgomery and friends, this record emerged from their geographically distant lives, yet it inhabits an intimate and almost tactile, shared sonic world. Their approach prioritizes process over formal structure, embracing layering, multitracking and imperfection. Montgomery’s cyclical, decaying compositions are shaped through intricate guitar, blending post-rock, folk and drone. Murphy meanwhile possesses a rare gift for transformation both through her piano and keyboard inflections and interventions and although her vocals often resemble fragments of words, consonants or vowels, they frequently function as pure sound while still making the compositions deeply human.
