Rai Tateishi (live processing by Koshiro Hino)
Rai Tateishi hones his artistic sensibility by living in a depopulated village, surrounded by nature. He explores a unique expression of the shinobue (a Japanese bamboo flute) by blending traditional techniques with experimental approaches. During Le Guess Who?, his performance will be live processed by sound artist, and fellow goat (JP) band member, Koshiro Hino, who also produced Tateishi’s album, Presence: a triumph of improvised, elemental musicality that distills aspects of myriad folk traditions. Tateishi adapts unusual and extended instrumental experiments to articulate uniquely animist sound arrangements, with judicious use of a ring modulator and delay effects subtly altering his sound in real-time, gelling the harmonics and smoothing off its contours.
