Pharoah Sanders
Curated by Shabazz Palaces
Pharoah Sanders isn't just one of the biggest jazz icons to ever set foot on a stage. In many ways, he transcends jazz music's conventions like few others. His employment of the tenor sax is unequaled, using it as much for primal screaming as a graceful instrumental component. Sanders eagerly bleeds jazz traditions out into the spiritual realms of gospel, soul, African folk and R&B, influencing artists as diverse as The Stooges, Marvin Gaye and Sun Ra (who coined his moniker).
