Ored Recordings: Jrpjej
Hidden Musics (2021)
2019 was quite a different year for ethnographic label Ored Recordings. Instead of setting out on expeditions throughout the frozen Caucasus mountains on a quest to collect traditional music from the region, they stayed back home and focused on having their acts play for city folk. At the time, label star Zaur Nagoy hailed one of their most notable concerts, at Moscow's Fields Festival. Now, we welcome Nagoy to LGW, to enchant all with his dark and beguiling song-stories and spoken-word ballads.
Usually, Russian label Ored Recordings (a fascinating catalog of traditional music from “Caucasus, Russia and the world”) work by proxy, seeking out folk artists and showcase their work. Jrpjej is their first “actually produced” release; much due to the fact that Timur Kodzokov, part of the band, is also a member of the label. For this reason and many more, this project feels precious; confirmed when hearing how inventive the group is in creating a sound which both feels ancient and novel.
