Maryam Saleh
A singular and enduring voice in Egypt’s alternative music scene, Maryam Saleh has become both an icon and a source of inspiration for generations of musicians, drawing from shaabi, folk and experimental traditions to shape a distinctly contemporary Arab musical language. Her latest work, Syrr (“secret”), co-produced with Maurice Louca and Kamilya Jubran, emerged from a rigorous three-year process of writing and composition. Rooted in Egyptian and Arabic song forms, Syrr unfolds as an intimate and mythic song cycle—rich with poetic detail and dramatic musical textures. Saleh’s live performances are renowned for their emotional intensity and her magnetic stage presence. On stage, Syrr is a ritual of deep listening: a powerful convergence of song, memory, devotion and a longing to commune, echoing traditions of spiritual trance while remaining contemporary.
