Maalem Houssam Guinia
The son and successor of the late Maâlem Mahmoud Guinia, Maalem Houssam Guinia is an emblematic figure in the practice of Gnawa music. This West African music tradition—blending ancestral West African animism, Sufi Islamic mysticism, and Berber traditions—is inherited within the family and passed down from generation to generation. Still in his twenties, Houssam continues the tradition as a rich treasure of ceremonial folklore, poetry, and dance. Its deeply hypnotic and repetitive rhythms are believed to have spiritual and healing powers. For this reason, the music was originally used as a supporting element in ceremonies, where participants can enter a trance-like state.
