There is a good reason why names such as John Zorn, Matana Roberts, and Fred Frith have rushed to play with Ava Mendoza, as the Brooklyn guitarist, vocalist, and composer has built a reputation as one of the most innovative to emerge out of the New York scene. Despite these crossovers, and, mainly, her work with the trio Unnatural Ways, Mendoza is also a prolific solo composer. At Le Guess Who?, she will present her most recent work alone, 2021’s ‘New Spells’. The record was described by Marc Ribot as ‘not just another record, but a new sound’.
