Alsarah & The Nubatones
Curated by aja monet
Born out of many conversations between singer-songwriter Alsarah and percussionist Rami El Aasser, about nubian ‘songs of return’ and modern migration patterns, Alsarah & the Nubatones have dubbed their sound as ‘East-African retro-pop’. A common love for the richness of pentatonic sounds and shared migration experiences, expanded the conversation to include oud player Haig Manoukian and bass player Mawuena Kodjovi. Their albums Manara (2016) and Seasons of the Road (2025) showcase intimacy in the creative process, as the band explores the many emotions and themes that mark long journey: one after immigration begins and one going back to visit home. Their music is a quest, and also a celebration of all the ways in which we shift, change, and grow as we seek to build a new life.
