During Le Guess Who? 2021, our media partner Pan African Music captured video portrait of DJ's Menzi and Turkana. Both artists performed at the Nyege Nyege Tapes present Hakuna Kulala Club Night at the festival.
Durban native Menzi has been a steady presence in South African electronic music for a number of years. After producing for several notorious acts, like Babes Wodumo, Moonchild Sannelly, and Mahotella Queens, as well as organizing Durban’s largest annual Gmoc block party, Menzi finally unveiled his first EP in 2020 - but his distinct and ferocious production was already iconic far before it.
After attending a workshop in deejaying and music producing by East African platform Femme Electronic, model Anita Kevin decided to try it herself. Watching her do her thing as DJ Turkana, we would believe she was born making the crisp hard dance mixes that led her to feature on the Nyege Nyege Tapes compilation ‘L'Esprit de Nyege’. If Turkana sounds this good so early into deejaying career, we can only feel excitement at what the future will bring to her craft.
