Aba Shanti-I
24 HOUR DUB
Returning to Le Guess Who? for 24 HOUR DUB, Aba Shanti-I is one of those heavyweights who shaped what dub music and sound system culture are today. Born in London to Antiguan parents, he grew up immersed in reggae music and eventually became a resident of the Notting Hill Carnival as well as one of the leading DJs in the UK roots scene since the 1990s. Much more than a sound system operator and producer, Aba Shanti-I’s selections, vocals and stories serve as a powerful reminder of the role dub culture has played as a spiritual and cultural weapon against systems of oppression, nourishing and sustaining Black communities.
This artist is part of 24 HOUR DUB: a 24-hour session of continuous dub sounds that brings together pioneers, poets, engineers, sound system architects, and a new generation of bass explorers. More info about the program can be found via leguesswho.com/24-hour-dub.
