Last month, Baskot Lel Baltageyya (meaning 'cookies for thugs'), a Cairo-based project headed by musician Adham Zidan and poet Anwar Dabbour, released their self-titled debut album. An album that serves as an extension of their phantasmagoric live show.
Baskot Lel Baltageyya started as an audiovisual project, and from the beginning, Zidan has resisted the idea of it being pinned down as one thing - for him, it can be a band, an entirely new genre, or simply a consumable.
In their live shows, Baskot Lel Baltageyya’s psychedelic grooves, as heard on their album, also take on new shapes. Pushing this further, the group’s latest music video reflects their visual storytelling philosophy, while delivering a light-hearted, yet thought provoking clip, directed by Super7amdy.
The album is mastered by Heba Kadry, who is one of the guest curators for Le Guess Who? 2023. Baskot Lel Baltageyya is part of her curated program, and will perform during the festival on Saturday, 11 November. Also performing at the festival are a.o. 3Phaz, Al Nather, Julmud, Ak'chamel, and many more.
