Talk: The Music Journalist as Gatekeeper
As music and media are so closely connected, we often underestimate the role of the music journalist in the distribution of music. At one point, a portal from obscurity to recognition, music journalists are no longer the gatekeepers they once were. So how much can a music journalist do for an artist in 2022? How have our roles been redefined, especially in terms of what responsibilities we feel towards the artists that we cover? And how have technological/cultural shifts impacted both the market realities of music journalism, and the circulation and representation of traditionally underrepresented artists and sounds?
This talk will be moderated by Laura Snapes. Guest speakers will include Dalia Al-Dujaili (AZEEMA), Ian Harrison (MOJO Magazine) and Tayyab Amin (Truants).
