Siti Muharam
On Zanzibar singer Siti Muharam’s shoulders rests the legacy of her great-grandmother, taarab music legend Binti Saad. Saad is credited as a true trailblazer, being the first woman in East Africa to record her music in an album ever. In 2020’s ‘Siti of Unguja’ (which garnered her a prestigious Songlines Awards for African Artist of the Year), her great-granddaughter showcases her will to keep her pioneering spirit alive, by mixing traditional sensibilities with more heady, contemporary influences.
