Kenyan composer and sound artist Nyokabi Kariũki can be found between New York, Maryland, and Nairobi. Her sonic imagination covers classical and experimental music, as well as sound art, pop, film, and (East) African musical traditions. She channels it into the piano, voice, electronics, and several African instruments, such as kalimbas, the mbira, and djembe. Kariũki’s artistry is wholly revealed on ‘FEELING BODY’, her first LP, released this year and described by Pitchfork as ‘a gripping meditation on illness and healing’. It is, according to her, a tribute to bodies’ resistance, and ‘an expression of love, and gratitude, to my own’.
