Katey Red
Curated by Devendra Banhart
As a transgender, Katey Red was one of the first openly gay artists within the masculine bounce hip hop-scene. Red became known for her rapid, machine gun-like beats and her explicit, gender fluid lyricism, earning great respect within the New Orleans bounce scene and far beyond. Throughout the years, she’s grown to become an example for other queer rappers. As the New York Times stated: “A lot of things wouldn't be going on in this town without her.”
