‘An immaculately frayed conception of dubwise dream-pop’, wrote Boomkat about ‘Untitled’, YL Hooi’s standout 2019 debut. Valya Ying-Li Hooi’s project, whose first LP struck many critics as one of the year’s best, is produced in close collaboration with fellow Australian Tarquin Manek, of Blackest Ever Black. The music is genreless, haunting, and seductive - emotional and detached all at once. Live, they make use of the voice, trumpet, bass clarinet, guitar, bass, drum machines, and synths to make it come alive. All the while, they remain coolly aware of the improvisational possibilities that open up to them before each new audience, venue, and space.
