Talk: Reframing "World Music"
“Unfamiliar” sounds, from “unknown” parts of the world. Exoticizing entire cultures from a global North perspective, such are the traditional descriptors attached to so much of what has been draped under the term “World Music”. As a festival striving to present global sounds, LGW invites this conversation on a controversial term whose reinterpretation is long overdue. Investigating who has typically defined “World Music” and how, this talk explores a reframing of “World Music” from a local perspective.
Considering the essential relationships of musicians to the place in which they practice, we look at how artists’ local perspective is embedded in their music, and attempt at reframing based on how they see themselves in the wider global context.
This talk will be moderated by Christina Hazboun. Guest speakers will include: Liliane Chlela, Manuka Honey, and Chris Eckman (Glitterbeat).
