Talk: Beyond Barriers
Some experiences, imagaries, and sounds are unforgettable: For instance, one may recall a saxophone player passionately performing amidst a fervent demonstration. Or one might have seen videos of children dancing joyfully among the ruins of what were once their safe homes. Or hearing an Indigenous woman singing about (and for) her land.
Music possesses the unique ability to evoke feelings of solidarity, empowerment, and unity, while also facilitating deep emotional connections among people. The sounds, anthems, songs, and poems that transcend linguistic, national, and political boundaries raise an important question: Can sonic art, specially those emerging from the struggle to overcome various challenges and systemic obstacles, serve as a vehicle for empowerment, liberation, and transnational solidarity?
