Seni Reak Juarta Putra

West Java is home to Reak, a spiritual trance ritual that has existed in the region for hundreds of years. Seni Reak Juarta Putra, an original community of the Reak ceremony, offers this year’s Le Guess Who? audience a rare glimpse into the ceremony. Called ‘completely overwhelming’ by Soundvenue, the performance sees the musicians double the communal ritual, which is meant to cause possession and connection to the spirits through music and dance, with skin drums and a special double reed instrument - dogdog and tarompet, respectively. As they too go into a trance of their own, the audience is invited to take part in the ritual to the fullest.
