Activating the Egyptian Heritage through New Methods
Reports from Other Continents
This report follows the work of Yunis, an artist, and musician from Kafr El Dawar, Egypt. Here, Yunis discusses his work as a mediator between traditional, popular music and contemporary productions. Egyptian artists often find themselves pigeonholed into certain styles or genres in such a vibrant and lively music scene. Yunis’s music rejects classification and taxonomies: he blends an array of styles such as Zar, Nubian, and Moulid. His philosophy is that the Egyptian heritage can be activated through this blend of styles and his unique production techniques. Ultimately, "popular" music is what he strives to create. The video follows Yunis navigating through his hometown of Kafr El Dawar, and playing a set in Cairo.
