Nok Cultural Ensemble
Sunday
Curated by Nala Sinephro
Glitching beats unfold on African timelines, expressed through free jazz sensibilities and the futuristic pulse of dub technologies; such is the sound of Nok Cultural Ensemble, Nigerian-British musician Edward Wakili-Hick (of Sons of Kemet, Steam Down, and Kokoroko)’s new collective. Inspired by the West African cultural ensemble bands of the sixties, Wakili-Hick and collaborators sketch afro-diasporic percussive traditions in songs that sound both archival and futuristic. At Le Guess Who?, Wakili-Hick will be joined by Ras Asheber, Marcus Joseph, and Dwayne Kilvington to play the music of last year’s ‘Njhyi’ live.
