John Surman’s career recently entered its sixth decade, an impressive feat of which this composer, one of the most prolific to emerge from the British Isles in recent memory, can be proud of. Many tend to have their sense of adventure dwindled by age – but, well into his seventies, Surman is still trying new things; among which, a performance at this year’s Le Guess Who?, in which he will be joined by British jazz pianist Alexander Hawkins.
