In the grassy plains of Araucanía and Patagonia persists the Mapuche, an indigenous people native to south-central Chile and southwestern Argentina. Through land disputes, cultural discrimination, and the struggle for the recognition of their rights, they have been tested - but persevered. And, for Gulumapu-based Mapuche artist Eli Wewentxu, the violin is a means of resistance. The instrument has been with him since childhood, but, via his practice, Wewentxu has constantly reshaped his relationship to the strings. Continuously shattering preconceptions of so-called ‘Western’ instruments globally Wewentxu reinvents it in new, non-Eurocentric ways.
