Walk around for long enough in any working-class neighborhood in Colombia and you will come across a picó - a powerful sound system whose social and communal importance cannot be overstated. Each picó is different from the next, as they all have distinct names and personalities, carved out through the way they look and sound. Despite their potent relationship with popular music, they have not remained untouched by technological development; in fact, these living cultural organisms keep evolving. Record collectors and musical librarians Edna Martinez and DJ Nomad, for instance, have created the very first picó party in Germany - ‘El Volcán - El Orgullo de Berlin’. Now, they erupt in the Netherlands too.
