Dumama as part of ‘Questions of Home’ curated by Raziyah Heath
In an richly textured blend of sound and re-imagining of the poetic music traditions of the Xhosa people of South Africa, Dumama joins forces with saxophonist and synth artist Pachakuti, and drummer-vibraphonist Dylan Hunter Chee Greene, to explore the depths of embodied archives through sensibilities of free jazz and Xhosa devotional music. As a storyteller and lyricist, Dumama weaves together childhood songs, personal memories, and stories with electronic hues and gestures, experimenting with the divide between traditional oral culture and futuristic, globally oriented poetics in her expansive embodiment of an African technological consciousness. This performance creates a reflective space where rhythm, resonance, prayers for peace and narrative come alive, bridging past and present through a dialectic sonic journey investigating the spiritual impulse in song.
