As Bong-Ra, Jason Kohnen fuses monolith sub-frequencies, jazz percussion, wailing saxophones, and ritualistic chants. All of these can be heard on his second Tartarus Records release, this year's 'Meditations'. Heavily inspired by stoicism, the record's name draws inspiration from Marcus Aurelius’ classic. For years, Jason Kohnen was a pioneer of dance music microgenre breakcore - two decades on, however, he traded in the carnage of breakcore for the quiet rumination heard on ‘Meditations’. In it, the bass lies at the center, supported by Colin Webster's drums and saxophone, and the oud, played by Dmitry El-Demerdashi.
