One of the most expansive torch-bearers of modern experimental composition, Eric Douglas Porter, also known as Afrikan Sciences, has been reinventing contemporary Black music since the early aughts. His sonic formations, heard across labels such as PAN, Firecracker Recordings, and his own The Student Body Presents, are complex, and, yet, they gleam with openness to the curious listener. Porter’s scope of influences is massive, as he is inspired by percussionists like Milford Graves and Art Jenkins, early Chicago house, hard-bop, and Sun Ra’s enveloping ‘Omniverse’. His own live performances, however, are uniquely celestial.
