Phelimuncasi - Live at Le Guess Who? 2023
Durban-based Gqom futurists Phelimuncasi (Nyege Nyege Tapes) brought their life-affirming energy to Le Guess Who? 2023, providing ample space to dance and sweat at TivoliVredenburg's Pandora stage. Relive the performance with our concert film below.
About
Much like the South African bee after which they named their most recent album, once you get stung by the Durban trio Phelimuncasi’s music, it’s hard to keep still. Following their acclaimed debut ‘2013-2019’, ‘Ama Gogela’, released via Nyege Nyege Tapes, re-establishes the group as a formidable force. Their sound, however immediate, is also imbued with deep meaning and tradition, harkening back to the sound of protest dance toyi-toyi, used abundantly during anti-apartheid demonstrations. Now, Phelimuncasi carry on the spirit of resistance, and their revolutionary streak has led them to tour not only music festival grounds but also political functions such as the African National Congress.
